Elgar in Sussex

ELGAR IN SUSSEX: A village weekend of Chamber Music, 2 – 4 June 2017

A series of concerts will be held in and around Fittleworth and Stopham commemorating Sir Edward Elgar’s stay at Brinkwells on the Stopham Estate between 1917 and 1919. The Elgars spent two years enjoying the peace of West Sussex as Sir Edward found living in wartime London a trial both to his health and his creativity. It was during his stay in this idyllic location that he wrote some of his finest music, including the wonderful Cello Concerto.

Brilliant festival. I’ll keep a look out for future concerts – maybe of the Piano Quintet & Violin Sonata & possibly a concert of ‘Wood Magic’. I brought my friend over on my Kawasaki Ninja sportsbike this afternoon, love the church & seeing the memorial with ‘Sursum Corda’ inscribed on it (a possible link to Elgar’s orchestral piece?).
